Pediatric Dermatology
A child’s skin is delicate and can be affected by various conditions, ranging from harmless newborn rashes to more persistent concerns like eczema and infections. While some issues resolve on their own, others may require medical attention.

The following are some common skin problems in infants and young individuals, along with their causes and symptoms :

Genetic Skin Conditions
Some children are born with rare genetic skin conditions like ichthyosis (excessively dry, scaly skin) or epidermolysis bullosa (fragile, blister-prone skin). These conditions require special care and management to prevent infections and irritation. Early diagnosis and proper skincare routines can help improve comfort and skin health.

Newborn Skin Issues
Newborns often develop harmless skin conditions like baby acne, heat rash, and birthmarks. These are usually temporary and clear up on their own. Common examples include erythema toxicum (red blotches), milia (tiny white bumps), and infantile hemangiomas (strawberry marks). If a rash looks unusual or worsens, consult a pediatric dermatologist.

Eczema and Allergies
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) causes red, itchy, and dry skin, often triggered by allergens, weather, or irritants. It is common in children and can be managed with moisturizers, gentle skincare, and prescription creams if needed. Cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis) also affects babies, causing flaky patches on the scalp but usually resolves on its own.

Skin Infections
Children are prone to bacterial, viral, and fungal skin infections. Impetigo (yellow-crusted sores), molluscum contagiosum (pearly bumps), hand-foot-and-mouth disease (blisters on hands and feet), and ringworm (scaly patches) are common. Treatment varies from topical creams to antifungal medications. Good hygiene helps prevent the spread of infections.

Autoimmune Skin Problems
Autoimmune skin conditions occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own skin or hair. Vitiligo causes white patches due to pigment loss, while alopecia areata leads to sudden hair loss. While not contagious, these conditions may require medical treatment like creams, light therapy, or specialized care.

Birthmarks and Skin Growth
Birthmarks like hemangiomas (raised red spots) and port-wine stains (flat, dark red patches) appear at birth or shortly after. Most are harmless and fade over time, but some may need laser treatment or medical care if they grow or interfere with vision or breathing.

Skin Colour Changes
Changes in skin color can occur due to sun exposure, healing rashes, or genetic factors. Pityriasis alba appears as light patches after eczema, while café-au-lait spots are harmless birthmarks. If new patches appear suddenly or change in size, consult a dermatologist for evaluation.

Hair and Nail Problems
Hair and nail problems in children include fungal nail infections, brittle nails, and hair loss from conditions like trichotillomania (hair pulling) or alopecia. Some nail changes are harmless, but others may indicate underlying health issues. A dermatologist can assess and recommend the right treatment.

Acne and Sweat Gland Issues
Acne is common in teenagers due to hormonal changes, but babies can also get neonatal acne. It appears as pimples, blackheads, or cysts and may require medicated creams, proper skincare, or prescription treatments. Hidradenitis suppurativa, a sweat gland condition, causes painful lumps and needs medical attention.
